  1. Somedorkydude says:

"Try to think of another story where the setting is the main focus."

What I came up with in exactly ten seconds.

Journey, pt, bioshock, the starwars prequals, the giver, half life, portal, and probably more.

They aren't as common but Not that rare

  2. BloodWinterTales says:

The think I love the most is the yin Yang of Jorge and Emile. One is a walking weapon carrying a machine gun and heavy armor but he’s the most human trying to comfort a girl who lost her father. He’s a spartan but he’s never lost his humanity. Emile on the other end. Seems afraid to be human he’s a spartan that’s all he cares to be he’s a weapon a killer. He’s given up on being or appearing human. The two types of Spartans

  3. Don says:

“Halo: Ghosts of Onyx” is the origin story for the Spartan III program, similar to how “Halo: Fall of Reach” is the origin story for the Spartan IIs. I happen to think Ghosts of Onyx is one of the best Halo novels to date. Furthermore, the game (Halo: Reach) does retcon not only the Fall of Reach book, but also Ghosts of Onyx. I understand your diplomatic approach to reconciling the games and extended lore, but man oh man I wish Microsoft would patch it all up somehow.

  4. Simon Nylund says:

I just finished playing Halo CE through Reach. I absolutely loved Reach. By far the most fun campaign IMO. The storytelling was on point. I just started playing Halo 3 ODST and I'm looking forward to Infinite!

  5. Captain Marvel Wilson says:

The same can be said for Star Wars and how some of the movies, shows, novels and games retcon a lot from the EU. Yet, they are considered to be great to amazing. Mostly because some of the EU is not that great, and was made better.

  6. chirag yadav says:

Well to some extend you can say LOTR is a setting driven story, not character driven. But by the end of the you can only convay a story through character and a decision they make. Like something in Dark Soul you play as a character that really does not have any history. But the decision we make excels the plot in Dark Soul, so there are story driven by setting i would argue that a much morden example would be Elden Ring

  7. Jake says:

I felt like the only character that was truly left out was Jun, but I full heartedly believe Halo Reach was the best campaign across all the Halo Games, second only to Halo 3 which was my childhood comparatively to Halo 3 ODST but that can be argued as the same game, as mentioned in Act Man's ODST video

Halo Reach had characters that were needed, like Act Man emphasized, their roles being played to a substantial amount without overshadowing the main character; the setting. A game that truly breaks the mold where the setting, the atmosphere, and the music alone make this game an amazing gem.

Just a small shout out that you get to customize your player character, unlike the other halo games

Thank you, Act Man, for these videos. I know I'm quite a bit late, but I always come back to these and the ODST videos just to hit the nostalgia of just how great these games were.

  8. Madooka Magooka says:

So Cortana in reach was created from forerunner technology/data fresh like that, had an adventure with noble team, forgot about them seconds after they died to get her to the pillar of autumn, and then acts like she's known MasterChef forever and that she chose him.

I love reach to death but narratively it often makes 0 sense in halos story.

  9. McFeddle Eggle says:

    Stories centered on the Setting:
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Series, STALKER (1979), & Roadside Picnic (all inspired by or in the same universe), the Zone is a far more fleshed out and awesome environment than Reach.
Metro Series (similar to S.T.A.L.K.E.R.), not entirely setting driven but the Metro is a very large part. Similar in scope to Reach in how it's fleshed out.

Reach is so good, but these games are also very good. Similarities are slim, and Metro is far easier to get into than S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

  10. JyeJye says:

theres meant to be a sequel bungie have in mind with Junn and how he deals with the aftermath and makes the stealth sniper squad thats Linked to the operations of 117

  11. Eliack55 says:

I see this video came out before its release, but Zelda Breath of the Wild is so setting driven, that there is barely any story to speak of, and the protagonist literally says nothing, ever.

  12. ProfMew says:

I disagree. Strongly. Here is all I could grasp from each character, and Im the sort of person who enjoys storys for the characters. If I had got to spend more then 5 minutes with them each, somewhere on the other side of the map, I might have managed to remember their names. One was like Guile? Emily? Something like that. I think the submissive definitly not spy, robo-arm chick was called Cat? Kawai.

Robo-Arm: Hacker or something, rougue type, de facto leader of nobleteam. Killed randomly in a cutscene, story led nowhere.

Sniper: Didnt realise he existed untill the game was basicly over. Helped me realise that the characters can all be summed down to the weapons they use. Dont even know how he died.

Blue: Was never sure if there was one or two. Pushover that allways manages to fuck it up untill Robo-Arm steps, never knows what he is doing and kills himself for no reason.

Big: Oh look, he is big and strong but secretly a nice guy. Never seen that before. Mommys baby boy, died because he didnt know how to set up a timer. Makes sense I guess, brawn over brain.

Skull: Had to count to see if I remembered them all. Had two lines in total, knife guy edgelord, quiet and probably listening to MCR. (The bad songs) At least he had the second only realistic and earned death.

Nr.6: I bet he needs a glass to milk to sleed every night, the newby novice to the team. Could have been interesting and mysterilusly badass, but they gave him appropriatly pathetic lines making it impossable to respect or even just relate to him. Also survived a fall from orbit…? Died in a cool way, allthough realy there was time to save him after he shot down the mothership. I wouldnt have gone back for him either though, milk boy isnt worth the risk. Or fuel.

Still missing some? Feel like I am. Anyways.

Dot: Oh right, generic computer voice had a name.

Halsey: Defenitly not secretly evil. Will 100% not betrail you. Never.

Big chief: Hey, I liked this one. Stuborn general who does everything to make it through a loosing war, allways has a plan ready to keep pushing back against the alliance.

Also, the music was sometimes incredably innapropriate.

  13. Modern Ape says:

The dialogue between the spartans is genuinely great. And i love that they tell you stuff about them without being beat over the head with it. Examples include Kat's arm, Jorge speaking Hungarian to the farmers, etc.
